Beneath the Sea

So much more becomes visible

When I close my eyes.

Last night, behind my lids

I stared down into the depths

And saw there a huge mass

Of primitive creatures

Fascinating to me.

There were tiny luminescent

Dots of life, too small to discern

Beyond some awareness of their

Presence.

They floated like suggestions

Of thoughts unborn.

And then fish like daggers

Flashed before me,

Exciting with their portent

And vanishing before sharing it.

Such astonishment and awe

Coursed though me as a

Great leviathan hove through

Those depths, massive and

Imperturbable as truths

Beyond understanding;

Frightening as death

And beautiful as life.
