Job’s Overlords

God sits quietly awaiting her visitor

Who comes each afternoon.

Lucifer, God’s twin, must visit.

They arose, like twin stars,

Twirling about one another,

Dust dancing, until

Life arose.

And death shall have no dominion.

Lucifer arrives, forever

Late, forever

Fierce, forever

Rageful, forever

And forever.

Ready to resume their eternal

Fight.

And death shall have no dominion.

How do you presume?

Spits Lucifer, to God,

Who sits quietly.

Answer me!

Spits Lucifer to God.

And her soft eyes lift to him

Filled with patience,

Perhaps with love.

And death shall have no dominion.

I could tear this garden to pieces,

Spits Lucifer.

I know. God’s voice

Makes no sound,

But is a zephyr in the air.

I know. I know. I know.

And death shall have no dominion.

You have no right,

No reason, no excuse

To be

Here.

I know.

And death shall have no dominion.

Your garden infuriates me.

It’s filled with colors.

It’s filled with flowers.

It’s filled with hope.

And nothing here is real!

And still God smiled

Like May sun on tulip petals.

And death shall have no dominion.

How can you permit yourself to do this?

How can you offer so much

When you know I will prevail?

I will pull every color into darkness.

I will rot every flower.

I will plunder every hope.

And still God smiled

Like chords from a Bach fugue.

And death shall have no dominion.

Here the sky is bright.

Here the sun is warm.

Here life thrives.

Here you sit smug and proud

Knowing nothing lasts

Knowing nothing lasts ever.

And still God smiled

Like quiet surf on a remote shore.

And death shall have no dominion.

You are my twin

We are the same!

Yet you persist

As though this were enough.

I must destroy all this

As you must build it.

Why do you persist

Amongst such futility?

And God’s smile

Was silent;

A Mona Lisa gazing at the world.

Where death had no dominion.
